What does "hit the bus stops" mean in the moive Milk?

In the movie Milk (2008), Harvey Milk says to Cleve Jones, "The polls are open in 3 hours. How about you and I hit the bus stops?" I don't understand what the phrase "hit the bus stops" means in this context. Will you please explain?
