Why would a cat choose to drink from a mud puddle?

I noticed one of my indoor/outdoor cats drinking from a mud puddle this morning. I've seen the strictly outdoor cats do this too, occasionally. Why, when they have clean bowls with fresh water, would they occasionally choose to drink muddy water?! Are they trying to ingest some needed minerals, or something?
